Most companies like to say, “Safety is our #1
concern!” The truth is
however most companies address safety last, if at all. Safety does not
help them meet deadlines.
Safety does not put money in the bank. But it can
keep from having an extreme amount flowing out for a very stupid, very
expensive mistake because safety was not the number one concern.
However Safety is very important, and should be addressed at all times.
The following is a true story of why safety is so very important.
The plow hitch in the up
position.
Some time ago, I was working for a facility that had
just gotten a new plow on a 4800 International. I was working in the
shop alone. The hitch was supposed to tilt forward after removing two
pins. It was only suppose to tip forward a few inches, in order to
provide room for the hood to open. But when the second pin came out,
the hitch, along with the 1” by 6” push bars, lift arm, and lift
cylinder, were free to fall to the ground and to tip forward.
The plow hitch in the
"fallen" position.
This is
a
lot of steel to fall on the mechanic. And that is exactly what
happened. Fortunately the hitch lift arm dug into the concrete. This
left a small triangle of space, that I was trapped in, but I was alive.
I was laying on my side, and the apparatus’s fall was cushioned by my
upper body. I thought “O.K. what do I do now?” I am hurt. I can not
lift over half a ton of steel.
This was the real live scenario; have no radio, no
cell phone, and no one could hear me. I started to wiggle and squirm
and after quite so time, I managed to free myself. I can only
approximate that I was there about twenty or thirty minutes. (That was
a bad day at the office.)
That was several operations ago, and I am a fraction
of my former self.
It is easy to see that any one of several safety procedures or
equipment could have prevented or minimized my injuries. The company
always said “Safety is our # 1 concern!”
“Safety is our #1 concern!” is more than a slogan.
By making “safety your #1 concern!’ you save injuries; you save lives.
